Able to Work:
Work Incentives Planning and Assistance
Many Social Security disability beneficiaries, families and community agencies have limited understanding of the impact of work on benefits and eligibility. Individuals need accurate and complete information to support going to work and the goal of increasing earnings. Our Able to Work: Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) program is a powerful community resource to promote employment and financial independence among individuals with disabilities who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Able South Carolina is excited to work alongside Walton Options Center for Independent Living to provide WIPA services to South Carolinians receiving or entitled to Social Security disability benefits. WIPA services are available to individuals, ages 14-full retirement age, who receive or are entitled to SSA benefits, typically Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and who are working or seeking employment. The program assists individuals in understanding the status of their benefits and how a change in work status may impact those benefits. SSA has created some great work incentives to encourage individuals with disabilities to pursue employment, and meeting with one of Able SC’s Community Work Incentives Coordinators can be invaluable to persons who are working or participating in current vocational rehabilitation, Ticket to Work, educational planning, or other career development activities.
The services include:
- A review of the individual’s benefits
- Discussion of current and future impact of employment
- Comprehensive written outline of options available to support informed choice
