UPSTATE EQUIP SPECIALIST (PART-TIME) 

Able South Carolina (Able SC) is South Carolina’s premier organization promoting disability rights, independence, and equity for individuals with disabilities. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 

The purpose of this position is to support Able South Carolina’s Equip Leadership Group program by providing peer mentoring to young adults, facilitating conversations with youth on topics such as disability pride, self-advocacy, and independent living in the Upstate. The functions of the position are directly delegated to the Equip Coordinator.

Location: Greenville, SC
Hours: Part-time, 24 hours per week  

Status: Part-Time, Temporary, Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $20/Hour 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: with or without reasonable accommodations 

  • Empower youth with disabilities and ensure peer mentoring is being provided in group and individual settings, including Equip Hangouts, community activities, and other events. 
  • Represent and recruit youth to represent Able SC and the disability community on various youth-related boards, committees, and councils as appropriate. 
  • Disseminate knowledge of Independent Living (IL) philosophy and best practices related to youth programming and support to staff, consumers, and the community at large. 
  • Create relationships with community partners to engage youth, parents, schools, and professionals in promoting independence for young adults with disabilities through Equip programming. 
  • Keep abreast with national transition, employment, and disability rights issues, policies, and best practice models. 
  • Keep Able SC staff informed about Equip programming and ensure accurate, timely information is on the website and social media pages. 
  • Serve as an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and assist with developing the future generation of disability leaders. 
  • Assist in the development of curriculum and youth programming to improve transition outcomes. 
  • Track and maintain documentation of program activities via reporting and data entry to fulfill reporting requirements and ensure grant goals are met. 
  • Carry out additional assignments as delegated by supervisors in a timely manner.

  • Adaptability and flexibility: The ability to adjust and respond to different situations and individuals, customizing the approach to meet the unique needs of each youth. 
  • Motivational skills: The ability to inspire and encourage the youth to set goals, develop self-confidence, and strive for personal growth and achievement. 
  • Teaching and coaching skills: The ability to effectively convey information, provide guidance, and facilitate skill development in a manner that is engaging, relevant, and accessible to the youth with disabilities. 
  • Cultural competence: The ability to understand, respect, and appreciate the diversity of the youth being mentored, recognizing and addressing any potential biases or stereotypes. 
  • Collaboration and teamwork: The ability to work well with others, including colleagues, supervisors, and community partners, in order to provide comprehensive support and resources for the youth being mentored. 
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices: Familiarity with the legal and regulatory landscape impacting individuals with disabilities and understanding effective strategies for promoting their well-being and development. 
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth: A willingness to continually expand knowledge, skills, and expertise to better serve the youth being mentored and stay current with developments in the field. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Personal motivation and maturity are a must. 
  • At least two years of documented experience working with persons with disabilities or personal experience with a disability required. 
  • Knowledge of disability rights and IL philosophy required. 
  • Knowledge of the service system, benefits, entitlements, and supports utilized by people with disabilities. 
  • Experience with working in teams to accomplish goals. 
  • Experience in the delivery of presentations and training to groups required. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written form. 
  • Must have access to reliable transportation. 
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office. 
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and related resources.
