Independent Living Specialist (Upstate) Job Description

Position Description

The purpose of this position is to empower youth with disabilities to reach their highest level of independence. Our organization is consumer-directed and advocates for full inclusion. Functions of the position are in direct delegation of the Upstate Lead Independent Living Specialist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrate Independent Living Philosophy
  2. Provide consumer-driven and directed services to consumers at all times
  3. Disseminate Independent Living philosophy to staff, consumers and the community at large
  4. Provide Information and Referral Services
  5. Acquire and refer to community resources
  6. Update the agency’s resource database with new resources
  7. Research resources and services needed to complete information requests
  8. Maintain knowledge of Able SC events and programs related to youth and employment and assist in recruiting consumers for participation
  9. Provide Advocacy Services
  10. Advocate for consumer choice and consumer-driven focuses in all situations
  11. Advocate with consumers to educate and support their interests, needs and rights
  12. Prepare and participate in consumer meetings related to advancing their rights
  13. Show awareness of and participate in systems advocacy related to education, employment, and youth transition
  14. Provide Peer Support Services
  15. Provide and coordinate peer support, and link consumers to peers
  16. Provide Independent Living Skills Training
  17. Assess independent living needs/requests, and develop goal plan with all consumers
  18. Provide independent living skills training tailored to individual needs as a peer supporter
  19. Maintain case files and database system with updated information on each consumer
  20. Protect consumer and agency information by adhering to confidentiality standards
  21. Provide coordination, follow along and support for individuals with active cases to support goal development
  22. Provide Civil Rights Awareness Services
  23. Stay current on legislation affecting youth with disabilities and employment
  24. Provide public information regarding the ADA and other related issues
  25. Be active in disability focused committees and work groups
  26. Employ Professional Judgment and Continue Professional Development
  27. Participate actively in staff meetings, workgroups and committees
  28. Identify and participate in trainings to advance knowledge and skills
  29. Carry out additional assignments as delegated by supervisors in a timely manner. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or other related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience providing support to persons with disabilities may be substituted for the college degree
  • At least two years of documented experience working with persons with disabilities or personal experience with a disability required
  • Knowledge of disability rights and IL philosophy
  • Knowledge of service system, benefits, entitlements and supports utilized by and available to people with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to related to youth
  • Experience with working in teams to accomplish goals
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Proficient with internet, email, and Microsoft Word
  • Knowledge of Assistive Technology and related resources
  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act preferred
