Able SC Statements On Disability Pride

At Able South Carolina, Disability Pride is one of our core values. Individual and community pride in being part of the disability community is critical as it builds confidence to navigate life and not feel ashamed of having a disability. “Disability” is not a negative word. We are proud of who we are, and the barriers we have overcome have only made us stronger. It’s okay to have a disability. Disability Pride Month is celebrated annually in July in honor of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26th, 1990. Since then the disability community has used the month of July and this important anniversary to celebrate our Disability Pride!

Blogs, Articles, and Podcasts featuring Able SC Staff Discussing Disability Pride:

  • In April of 2024 we had the opportunity to record a session with StoryCorps. We captured the story of Independent Living in South Carolina, what it means to be disabled, and have disability pride. The conversation covered ableism, disability justice, equity, and what we hope future generations who find our recording in the Library of Congress can take away from the stories of the past.
  • It's great to celebrate the love in our lives; the love, we have for our family, friends, and significant others is something beautiful that we need to appreciate. But sometimes our hearts are so full of love for others that we might forget to love ourselves, and people with disabilities who struggle with internalized ableism might have difficulty reminding themselves just how great they are. In this piece, written around Valentine's Day, Grace offers tips for radical self-love for people with disabilities!
