Migraine and Headache Awareness Month
Many disabilities and long-term health conditions can cause migraines or make them worse. June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month (MHAM). Even though June has passed, the Able SC public health team works to raise awareness all year long. This special month is a time when people worldwide come together to teach others about migraines, fight the shame around them, and support people living with these hidden brain conditions.
Migraine disorders are not just an occasional headache—they are serious brain-related conditions that can strongly affect a person’s daily life.
Migraine is more than just a headache. It can cause:
- Strong, throbbing head pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Vision or sensory changes (sometimes called aura)
These symptoms can last for hours or even days, making it hard for someone to work, go to school, or do everyday activities.
The 2026 campaign from the American Migraine Foundation focuses on the idea that even though migraine may not be visible, the people living with it deserve to be understood, listened to, and supported.
