Hurricane Season: Stay Safe This Hurricane Season – Plan Ahead

5/13/2026

Tropical storms, hurricanes, and typhoons are powerful weather events. Hurricane season in South Carolina runs from June 1 through November 1 each year. Even one strong storm can cause serious problems, including:

  • Flooding
  • Power outages
  • Dangerous storm surge
  • Strong winds and tornadoes

These storms can affect coastal areas and communities far inland. If you have a disability, planning can help you stay safe, prepared, and independent.

Know the Terms

  • Watch: Conditions are possible—start getting ready.
  • Warning: Dangerous conditions are expected—take action now.
  • Storm Surge Warning: Flooding from ocean water is likely—check for evacuation orders.

Stay Informed

  • Watch or listen to local news for updates.

Make a Personal Emergency Plan

Able SC has created a planning template designed for the disability community. Your plan should:

  • Include family members, caregivers, pets, and service animals
  • List emergency contacts and important medical information
  • Note any equipment or supports you rely on

If you use medical devices that require electricity (such as oxygen or power wheelchairs), contact your power company ahead of time to ask about priority restoration programs.

Pack an Emergency Supply Kit

Able SC has developed a checklist to help you prepare. Your kit may include:

  • Medications and copies of prescriptions
  • Phone, tablet, and charging equipment
  • Communication supports (such as communication boards or visual schedules)
  • Food, water, and hygiene items
  • Sensory items or comfort tools
  • Clothing, sturdy shoes, blankets, and a pillow
  • Supplies for pets and service animals (food, leash, bedding)
  • Face masks and hand sanitizer

Evacuation Tips

  • If you drive, keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Know more than one evacuation route.
  • Never drive through flooded roads.
  • If you do not drive, plan your transportation ahead of time. Talk with friends, family, neighbors, or your county emergency management office about options and resources.
  • If an evacuation is ordered, you can find open shelters on the SCEMD website.
  • Leave a note in your home with your name and where you have gone if you evacuate.

After the Storm

  • Wait until local officials say it is safe before returning home.
  • Check road conditions, power, and water safety first.
  • If your home is damaged or inaccessible, contact Able SC or your local emergency management office—we are here to help.
