Know Your EQUIP Leaders: Derrick

Hello my name is Derrick Means. I have a disability known as “Cerebral Palsy”. I currently work at Spartanburg High School, pizza hut, and Able SC. I graduated high school from Union County High School in 2008, got my associate’s degree from USC-Union in 2009, and my bachelors degree in 2013. I play the bongos and the congas. I am on the board with the Miracle League of Union County. I also play baseball with the Miracle League of Union County. I have one brother and one sister.

One of my main focuses as an EQUIP leader is self-advocacy and what that looks like. I want for every person living with a disability to know that they can do whatever they put their mind to. I will be analyzing the three parts to becoming a self-advocate. I am excited about sharing what I have gained so far. People with disabilities are able.

My involvement with equip is teaching other with a disability to learn how to self- advocate for themselves. Also I help my colleagues by becoming a better leader and growing. I enjoy working with equip because it allows me to put my skills to the test. People with disabilities can do it and we are able.
