GREENVILLE, SC (March 18, 2024) – Able South Carolina (Able SC) will celebrate its 30 years of service to the state of South Carolina at a public celebration event on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 2:30 pm at their Greenville, SC office found on 135 Edinburgh Court, Suite 101. The event will feature a proclamation from Greenville, SC’s Mayor, Knox White, naming the date Able South Carolina Day.

In 1994, following the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a group of South Carolinians with disabilities formed Able South Carolina, aiming to overcome the significant barriers they faced in being part of the community. For three decades, Able SC has remained dedicated to this mission, serving as a disability-led, consumer-controlled, community-based nonprofit and championing equity and inclusion for all people with disabilities in South Carolina. Their mission to equip, educate, and advocate for people with disabilities in South Carolina is as relevant today as it was in 1994.

Able South Carolina has held its location in Greenville since their 1994 establishment and serves thousands of upstate residents with disabilities, annually. Kimberly Tissot, Able SC’s president and CEO, expressed the vision behind their initiative: “Our vision is to create a South Carolina that is a national model of equity and inclusion for all people with disabilities. We work to develop a brighter future.”

Able South Carolina’s services to the community include transition from institutionalization to home and the community, peer support and mentoring, goal setting to achieve independence, youth transition from school to the workplace and independent living, accessibility consultation, disability integration in public health and emergency response, employment goal setting and benefits counseling, domestic violence, and sexual assault prevention, programs to educate the next generation of leaders with disabilities, and advocacy for individuals as well as advocacy for change to disability rights legislation.

“After 30 years of service to the community, we invite the public to join us in imagining what our next 30 years could bring,” shared Tissot. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and celebrate.
